North Luangwa National Park

 

buffaloBuffalo Camp Buffalo Camp overlooks the Mwaleshi River in North Luangwa National Park –  a vast and remote wilderness area with outstanding game, including huge herds of buffalo followed by lion and other predators. The reserve is not open to the public and there are only 3 lodges operating in the park. Buffalo camp is the smallest and simplest camp with three of the chalets on stilts overlooking the Mwaleshi river. Walking is the main activity in North Luangwa as there are few roads, although it is possible to do limited game viewing as well as night drives from the camp.

mwaleshiMwaleshi Camp A wonderful, no frills camp that really captures the essence of the bush and completely complements the atmosphere of the north park. Game comes to the open area opposite the camp to graze. You walk out from the camp twice a day, either over the river or behind camp. Delicious food is produced  with the fresh produce from Tafika’s huge kitchen garden. The airstrip is about 15 minutes by car from Mwaleshi. A landrover will collect your luggage on arrival and you will then walk from Mwaleshi airstrip 45 mins into camp. There is hardly any road system in the park so walking is essential.

 

Lower Zambezi National Park

Bangweulu Floodplains

 

shoebillShoebill Island Camp Shoebill Island Camp is a small, twelve bedded camp (under thatch) with panoramic views over the Bangweulu swamps. Bangweulu is a huge area north of Kasanka National Park and is excellent combined with Kasanka. Bangweulu has three main habitats; open water in the north, vast swamps in the middle and seasonally flooded plains in the south and east. The wetland area is fed by 17 rivers and drained by only one, the Luapula river which feeds into Lake Tanganyika. The Lukulu, a river feeding the wetlands, has papyrus swamps which is the breeding ground for the huge, almost prehistoric looking Shoebill stork. Bangweulu is one of the few places left in the world to see these bird in the wild. The area also attracts a huge amount of other water birds. It is also famous for its large herds of black letchwe, indiginous to the area.
